Learning the Hard Way – 3 Apps To Help Recover Your Phone If It’s Lost or Stolen

Have you ever been stolen from? It’s a rotten feeling. Unfortunately my Mother and Sister feel victim to theft last week. They were coming out of their gym when my mother noticed robberybits of glass on the ground near their car. Someone had smashed the window of my sister’s Jeep and stolen their pocket books.

I found out later that thieves like to target gyms for this reason. A lot of people leave their phones, wallets, and purses behind instead of putting them in a locker or carrying them around. Criminals capitalize on this and go slithering around gym parking lots looking for exposed valuables. Please keep this in mind the next time you go to work out. Leave your valuables at home, secure them in a locker, or the very least put them in the glove box or the trunk.

My Mother and Sister lost their purses, wallets, some cash, checks, credit cards, ID’s, and their phones. My mother asked me if I could track the thieves using her iphone. I knew it was possible, but I had never tried to before. I immediately went on the internet and tried to figure out how to do so. My search lead me to a dead end. I had never activated or installed any tracking software on my Mom’s iphone. A few minutes of preparation before hand could have made all the difference. Please learn from my mistakes and prepare from the possibility that your phone might be lost or stolen.  Consider using one of the following apps.

  1. Find-my-iPhone-iconFind My PhoneThe best part about this app is that it’s free. You just need to log into your cloud account and enable the “Find My Phone” feature. This app allows you to locate your phone on a map, remotely lock your device, play a sound, and display a message. The only problem is that your phone needs to be on and connected to the internet or the app won’t work. The best part about this app is that you can do it right now, it’s free and it literally takes seconds.
  2. gadgettrakGadgetTrak – Is an app that can be used on several electronic devices, laptops, phones, tablets etc. The app cost $3.99 and comes with some interesting features. Once you activate the app it sends you periodic location reports so you can track the movement of your device. It can also use cell phone towers and wifi to track your device so you won’t have to worry about it losing its internet connection. The cherry on top for this app is that it allows you to snap pictures of the would be thief with your phones camera.
  3. ihound_thumbiHound – Is a suscription based app. It allows you to track your phone like the previous two apps. It also has a unique geofencing feature. You set up perimeter and if you phone leaves that area it notifies you. This might be good tracking app for students. If you phone leaves your campus or school ground the app would notify you and you could use it to locate whoever has your device.

Please remember that you are not a crime fighter. If your phone is stolen and you do track down the thief do NOT confront them. This person is a criminal, you have no idea what they are going to do. Leave this to the police.

Learn from my situation, get some type of tracking app in your phone or tablet immediately. It may come in handy later.
